The Rio Grande Council, BSA is celebrating a post-COVID camping revival and the first complete summer of its beautiful new $7 million camping facilities with free summer camp for all Scouts this summer, July 3-7. The entire experience including meals, program, and items required for merit badge completion is available free of charge to Scouts this year only for the full week of campers.
There has never been a better time to start or restart your Scouting journey,” said Michael Henry, a long-time Scouter, council commissioner, and this year’s camp director. “COVID separated so many Scouts from their troops and the Scouting experience, and this year’s camp is a great way to restart their paths to Eagle rank and rekindle what can be lifelong friendships.”
Scouts will have over 35 merit badge options, plus additional activities such as BMX bikes and lifeguard certification, taught by senior Scouts and adult Scouters. Some of the more popular badges including swimming, rifle shooting, archery, and welding, but the variety of available badges is boundless with other options including chess, astronomy, fish and wildlife management, and weather—a particularly apropos badge as the Scouts weather the heat.
“The heat isn’t as bothersome as some might think,” says program director and former camp ranger, John Moreno. “We ensure the kids are safe--drinking plenty of water--and a lot of the merit badges and all of the meals are indoors with air conditioning.
The newly renovated Camp Perry, nestled just outside Rio Hondo in the central RGV, is one of the oldest continuously running Scout camps in the country with 2023 marking its 96th consecutive year of summer camp. Recent improvements include a brand new, spacious dining hall with state-of-the-art cooking equipment, a high-tech science-technology-engineering-math (STEM) building, and a large multipurpose building that includes a full-size basketball court, full telecommunication classrooms, and fully stocked first aid clinic.
“We took the opportunity while camp was closed during the pandemic to rebuild Camp Perry for the next generation to learn the lifelong skills and experiences Scouts develop here,” said council president, Dr. Jacob Margo, whose troop is also attending camp this year. “It is remarkable how many adults credit Scouting with their first exposure to their future career. Medicine, welding, and even the stars have influenced Scouts at Camp Perry,” he said, referencing former Rio Grande Council Scout and NASA astronaut, Michael Fossum, who attributes his early interest in astronomy to Scouting.
Young men and women between 11 and 17 years old can be Scouts and attend the free camp, and information can be found on the council site, www.riograndecouncil.org. Those interested in joining Scouts for the first time can find information on joining a troop at beascout.scouting.org. Scholarships to join a troop are available.
